What type of computers does SCCCC use?
SCCCC uses Windows-based workstations. Workstations are defined as small computer systems used by individuals for work-related applications, email, and Internet access.

How do I get my log-on information?
Your immediate supervisor will let you know when you are set-up with a network log-on and email account.
What are the log-on procedures?
Once your supervisor has provided you with your network log-on information, you can log-on to any computer in the agency connected to our network. Your user name is your first name dot last name, i.e., jane.doe. Your password is your first name plus the last 4 digits of your social security number, i.e., jane1234.
What is the correct way to exit a workstation or website?
The correct method of signing out of a workstation or website is to "log-off." When you log-off, you have improved security by telling your workstation or a website that you have completed your work session. This allows the device to put away all the resources you were using and prepare itself for the next session.
Why should I save my work?
Backing-up your work by copying files to a second medium (a disk or tape) is a precaution to take in case the first medium fails (your computer dies, for example). One of the cardinal rules in using computers is: Back-up Your Files Regularly. Even the most reliable computer is apt to break down eventually.
Where do I save my documents?
Each site saves files differently. If you are not on our network, you probably will save your files on the computer you use. If you are connected to the network, files are usually saved in a shared area. Please check with your supervisor to find out where your files should be saved.
How do I set-up "Out-of-Office" Assistant?
Set-up Out-of-Office Assistant in Outlook if you want to notify those who send you emails of your absence from the office for a specified time like vacations or family leave. Unfortunately, Out-of-Office Assistant will also reply to SPAM emails sent to you. This will verify to the SPAMers that your email address is valid, and consequently, you can expect to receive even more SPAM in the future. To set-up Out-of-Office Assistant:
1. Outlook
a. Launch the Outlook application
b. Click on the "Tools" menu choice and select "Out-of-Office Assistant"
c. Click "I am currently out of the office" and fill in the "AutoReply" box with the text you would like the system to automatically reply to the sender.
d. If you want, you can add rules, but it is not necessary.
e. Click "Ok"
2. Outlook Web Access (OWA)
a. Launch OWA and log-in using your email address and your password
b. Click on the "Options" box at the bottom left corner of the screen
c. Click on "I am currently out of the office" and fill-in the "AutoReply" box with the text you would like the system to automatically reply to the sender
d. Click on "Save and Close"

What is "re-booting"?
"Reboot" is another word for re-start. You can reboot your computer by clicking on the "Start" button, then choosing "Shut Down," then choosing "Restart." This is called a warm boot. You can also perform a cold boot by clicking on the "start" button, choosing "Shut Down" from the menu, and then choosing "Shut Down" from the options in the dialog box. Wait ten seconds after your workstation finishes shutting down to start the computer up again.
What is a server?
A server is a computer on a network that provides services to other computers on the network; it "serves"other computers attached to it.
What is a public folder?
A public folder is a collaborative feature available in the Outlook email program. Items placed in public folders are instantly available for everyone to see and use. Public folders can also have security permissions placed on them to allow only members of special groups to be able to see the public folder contents.
What is a virus?
A virus is a program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes. Even a simple virus can make copies of itself over and over. Such a virus is dangerous because it will quickly use all available memory and bring your system to a halt. An even more dangerous type of virus, called a worm, is capable of transmitting itself across networks, bypassing security systems, and infecting networked servers, and all your co-workers workstations.
How can I keep my computer system virus-free?

Do not open emails or attachments from individuals you don't know--if you're in doubt, don't.

Do not use USB drives (thumb drives) where you've saved data from a non-SCCCC network computer.

Do not play CDs in your computer.
